SMITH & LOWE RESIDENCE
Student Project: Residential Thesis | FIDM 2011 | Instructor: Richard Herb
Tasked with designing an existing two-story residence - we decided what type of family would be moving in and what their needs would be. I chose a nuclear family in early parenthood and enough space for a home office + garden. The existing floorpan did not leave enough space for a backyard but it did have a large upstairs patio that I wanted to turn into a lush, sustainable garden. Important components that I focused on were the trellis, Janus et Pie outdoor furniture to stand the test of time and a green house. A huge inspiration for the color scheme were organic materials used in gardening, terracotta planters dictated the colors of fabric chosen, teak wood for outdoor benches and stone that mirrored the dirt and fertile soil. The rest of the house design followed suit, with grey limewash walls, solid and large wood planks and beams to tie in the trellis and green accents throughout the home. Since the color schemes were a bit muted and similar to each other, texture played a huge role in materials selected. I wanted various textures to break up the space visually but to remain cohesive with the rest of the home.
